Free Idea: Make Bank From Conficker C

by trigatch4 on March 25th, 2009

computer_wormThis is a short-term idea so you’ve got to act quickly. No guarantees on this one – but with some hard work and a little luck you could make a lot of money.

Conficker C is a computer virus that aims to take over the entire interwebz on April 1st, 2009. I literally JUST saw the article on Yahoo News and apparently near the end of 2008 there were over 9 million computers infected. For now the virus does nothing, but come April Fools Day all the infected computers will be at the power of the worm and at this point, nobody has any clue what to expect. Will it reformat your harddrive? Steal your personal data? It’s all up in the air right now.

Here is an idea on not only making money with this information, but at the same time providing a useful resource and helping people:

Step 1 – Get A Domain Name

Grab a domain name that includes “Conficker C” in it. At the time of this post, some of the following were available:

I’ve linked to the above so you’ll get a free link if you employ that idea. However, I’ll check up on it so if you do a shitty job I’ll remove the link hehe.

Step 2 – Build The Website

Slap on wordpress and fill the site with information that people will be searching for:

  • What is Conficker C?
  • Does my computer have Conficker C?
  • How can I get rid of Conficker C?

Include whatever else you can think of. Do some research on past viruses/worms and see what type of information people are searching for.

Step 3 – Monetize

Prominently display affiliate offers for Anti-Virus software that can help them stay protected from viruses in the future on top of cleaning their system from Conficker C. There are other ways to monetize, like whoring your site out with Adsense which will inevitably contain tons of Virus Software ads, but selling some Anti-Virus through Commission Junction or another retailer is probably a good bet.

In fact, going through Amazon might not be a bad idea. The margins might be tiny, but all those click throughs from people who DON’T buy anti-virus might buy something else from Amazon within the 24 hour cookie period. Maybe do a little of both. I don’t know, up to you.

Step 4 – Promote

There are going to be a LOT of people asking about this in forums, yahoo answers and all over the freaking internet. If you’ve built your site properly it will ACTUALLY be a good resource for people looking for more information. They’ll appreciate you linked them because it will explain Conficker C, show how to check for it and get rid of it, and help them protect from other viruses in the future.

Step 5 – Luck

Of course you’re hoping that this Conficker C thing becomes a huge issue, which is pretty morbid, I know. People will be searching for Conficker C and related long-tails from now through April 1st and hopefully it will spike if the Virus hits computers in a big way. Your site will be a great resource and, with some SEO work, the power of keyword domains and a little luck, your site will be able to get some awesome organic traffic.

Step 6 – PPC perhaps?

Depending on how you rank organically, cost of clicks and all that jazz, you’ll probably have an awesome quality score for Conficker C keywords. Put it to good use!

Step 7 – Subscribe To My RSS Feed

If you end up either:

  • Using this idea, or
  • Liking free ideas and want to have the first opportunity to jump on others in the future

Subscribe to my RSS Feed as I’ll be posting Free Ideas when they pop in my head. I don’t have time to build out this site as I’m too busy with the stuff I’ve got going on. However, I can spend the 30 minutes it takes to share my idea with my subscribers and let someone else who is motivated to succeed at internet marketing give it a shot.
